The first Europeans to visit Port Royal, SC were the French in 1562. They named the site Port Royal "Porte Royall" for its naturally deep harbor, close to the Atlantic but sheltered from storms by nearby Hilton Head Island. Prior to its founding in 1711, vessels under four nations were chosen to visit Beaufort for its wonderful harbor, rich culture and war hospitality.
